Ettore Sottsass was born in Munich in 1917. He began his career in his father's architectural practice in Italy. Passionate about design, he also was interested in photography, jewelery, and painting. With a group of young designers he founded the Memphis project which questioned with humor the excesses of the consumer society at the time. They were concerned with cultural and artistic aspects and produced original and unusual works in limited series. In the 1980s, Sottsass decided to dissolve Memphis in order to focus on his architectural firm. He will then work for large groups such as Fiat, Apple, Serralunga and Emeco.
